The Chatham portion of Nauset Beach (aka North Beach) is coming to conclusion of a very active nesting and successful fledging (i.e., capable of flight) season for Piping Plover chicks. Unfortunately, the beach will have to remain closed to Oversand Vehicle (OSV) travel at this time due to the considerable presence of Least Terns. There are currently multiple Least Tern nests with eggs and unfledged chicks on the beach from the Town line to the Inlet. Least Terns are a protected species that nest later than Piping Plovers and so can extend the OSV closure period. Staff are continually monitoring the Least Tern nesting and fledging status; further updates will be forthcoming. Your cooperation is appreciated.
