The Mainsheet

Thank you to everyone who suggested names for this e-newsletter! We chose The Mainsheet for a few reasons and we hope you agree it's a good fit.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It is also reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper - the main sheet - which provides the top stories of the day. And we thought it was a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be a part of all that is happening in Town!

Hurricane Preparedness

With predictions for our region to feel some impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa later this week, it's a good time to take a moment to review your family's emergency preparedness plan. Review how you will stay in contact with one another in case of separation and how you will safely evacuate in a timely manner if instructed to do so.  Take the time before storm warnings are posted to check on the content of your hurricane preparedness kit. Refresh water, batteries, expired first aid products and any canned food. If you grabbed the cash out of the kit during the year make sure you replace it. Top off your car's gas tank and stay apprised of local weather reports if a tropical system is expected in the area.

Seasonal Beach Safety Reminders

Safety of beachgoers is always the highest priority of our beach patrol and lifeguards. These men and women are take their responsibility of keeping residents and visitors safe very seriously but they can only be successful if the public complies with their instructions and takes personal responsibility for themselves and their children.
Please respect designated swimming areas and check for any flagged warnings before entering the water. Red flags are flown when "No Swimming" conditions are in effect and Purple flags are flown for the presence of a marine hazard in the area.
The growing population of seals is attracting a greater number of sharks to our coastline. Never swim near seals. If a seal enters a designated swimming area or approachers swimmers, lifeguards and/or beach patrol staff will order everyone out of the water. Please comply with their instructions.
Enjoy our miles of beautiful beaches safely this summer!

Raccoon on a tree limb

Oral Rabies Vaccination Drop

Beginning on July 12 and lasting approximately one week, the Cape Cod & Southeast MA Rabies Task Force and the US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services will be conducting an Oral Rabies Vaccination distribution in our area in an effort to vaccinate wild raccoons to prevent the spread of raccoon-variant rabies on Cape. A federally owned helicopter operating out of Plymouth Municipal Airport will distribute vaccinated bait from approximately 300 ft. above ground level over most towns while others, including the majority of Chatham will be baited by hand out of vehicles. For more information follow the Cape Cod Rabies Task Force on Facebook.
