Monitoring the Weather

The Town of Chatham Emergency Management Team is prepared to respond to the community's needs before, during, and after this weekend's weather events. Town departments are in constant communication and work together to meet the needs of our community.

Please monitor local forecasts and take steps to prepare for possible power outages - charge your phones/devices, turn the thermostat down in your refrigerator/freezer, turn the thermostat up in your home, and close off unused rooms or areas of your home.

If conditions warrant, a Personal Care Site will open at the Community Center to allow residents and opportunity to warm up and recharge their phones and other electronic devices. Please monitor official Town of Chatham, Chatham Fire Department, and Chatham Police Department social media sites, Town of Chatham website, and local radio stations for more information.

For general storm related questions and concerns please call 508-945-5191.
For emergencies dial 9-1-1!

Bar chart of COVID-19 cases by month

COVID-19 Update

As of January 10, 2022 there have been 604 cases of COVID-19 reported in Town since the beginning of the pandemic. There have been 37 cases reported in the first 10 days of January 2022 compared to 30 cases reported in the first 10 days of January 2021.

The Town’s percent positivity as of January 6, 2022 for the previous two weeks rose to 14.67%, which is the highest on the Cape. For the same period, the Statewide average is 12.6% and the average for Barnstable County is 15.03%. The Town’s average daily incidence rate rose as well to 102.1, which is the fourth highest on Cape.

Of the 37 cases reported in January 2022, 41% were in unvaccinated individuals. The 20-39 year old age group still accounts for the majority of new cases.

SMART Health Card

This week the Commonwealth announced the launch of a new tool called "My Vax Records" which allows people to access their vaccination history and generate a digital COVID-19 vaccination card containing a QR code that can be used to verify vaccination status.

My Vax Records is easy to use - enter your name, date of birth, and mobile phone number or email associated with your vaccination record. You'll create a 4-digit PIN and receive a link to your vaccination record that will open upon re-entry of your PIN. Once you receive your SMART Health Card you can save it to your phone, screen shot it to your photos, or print out a paper copy.

Public Comment Period Open

Barnstable County has been allocated $41.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and your input is needed on how those funds should be spent.

Public input from residents of Barnstable County will be accepted through Friday, February 4, 2022 on the four funding priorities set by the County Commissioners in November 2021:

  • Invest in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure

  • Fund public health system costs associated with the COVID-19 response, and other costs and related capital investments necessary to strengthen the public health system of the County and its towns

  • Fund projects targeting the negative economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on households, small businesses, non-profits, impacted industries, and disproportionately impacted communities

  • Fund proposals to replace lost public sector revenue; provide premium pay to employees providing essential work during COVID-19

You can provide your input by submitting an online survey, sending an email with comments, or call 508-556-4733 and leave a voicemail with comments.

Fire/Rescue Department Awarded Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant

The Fire/Rescue Department has been awarded $12,957.59  by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and the Department of Fire Services for the purchase of critical life safety equipment.

The Department will utilize these funds to purchase two full ensembles of firefighting protective gear, including pants, boots, jacket, protective hood, helmet, and gloves.

Additionally, the Department was approved to purchase three water rescue dry suits and five water rescue life jackets, which will be issued to new members of the Department’s Water Rescue Team. This team trains throughout the year for water-based rescue scenarios to support both the United States Coast Guard and the Town’s Harbormaster Division.

Finally, the Department will utilize these grant funds to purchase four Hydrogen Cyanide gas detectors, which will be placed on each of our three engines and the quint/ladder truck. Hydrogen Cyanide is a toxic byproduct of combustion and is present at most building fires. This piece of equipment is essential to identify one of the numerous threats our firefighters potentially face every day.

We thank the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and the Department of Fire Services for past and continued support offered to the Town, and the efforts these agencies make to provide for safer working conditions for firefighters across the Commonwealth.

Library Take-Out at EPL

To accommodate patrons who are reluctant to mix with the public out of a concern for their health or the health of a family member due to the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases, the Eldredge Public Library is offering a modified version of its curbside pick-up: Library Take-Out.

To take advantage of this contactless pick-up option, please note the following instructions:

  • If you have an item on the hold shelf, and you have been notified that it is ready for pick-up, call the Library at 508-945-5170 on the day you are picking up the item.

  • Unfortunately, Library staff is unable to deliver to your car, so you must be physically able to come into the building via the side, rear entrance to retrieve your bagged item from the shelf. Masks are required.

  • Your item will be bagged and clearly marked with your name written on the bag. Make sure you take your bag.

  • Plan to pick up your requested item on the day you call. These items will only stay on the pickup shelf for the day you call. Anything not picked up by the end of the business day will be sent back to the owning library or given to the next person in line.

Please do not use this service if you are comfortable coming into the Library to browse and self-select. This service is not for those who  tested positive for COVID-19, are experiencing symptoms, or are quarantining due to close contact. For the health and safety of EPL staff and patrons, do not come to the library if you are unwell or COVID compromised.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
