Voters seated outdoors at Veterans Field for 2022 Annual Town Meeting

The Results are In!

Thank you to all the voters and non-voting taxpayers who turned out for 2022 Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, May 14th! It was a long afternoon and a bit chilly when the fog rolled in but all 65 articles were dealt with in just short of 6 hours.

A special thank you is due to our Brewster-Orleans-Chatham-Harwich Community Emergency Response Team (BOCH CERT) for all of the assistance they provided on the day. These outdoor meetings would not run nearly as well without these volunteers!

Thank you, too, to the voters who came out to the polls on May 19th. We welcome Michael Schell to the Select Board and congratulate Jeffrey Dykens on his re-election to the Board. The Board held a brief meeting to re-organize on Friday, May 20th. The Board's new officers are Jeffrey Dykens, Chair; Cory Metters, Vice Chair; and Michael Schell, Clerk.

Bar chart of COVID-19 cases by week

COVID-19 Update

Seventeen additional cases of COVID-19 were reported in Chatham last week continuing the trend of 15-20 new cases per week experienced in the last 5 weeks. This number only includes positive results reported to the State so it is likely that the count is higher due to at-home positive test results.

Chatham's percent positivity as of May 12th for the two preceding weeks was 9.52%, the 4th highest on Cape. This is higher than the State-wide average of 6.35% and Barnstable County's average of 8.88%.

The Town's average daily incident rate for the same period remained at 38, unchanged from the previous week, and the 9th highest on Cape. The State-wide average was 41.7 and Barnstable County's was at 38.5.

The Centers for Disease Control has designated Barnstable County as an area of "High" transmission and recommends that masks be worn in indoor public settings.

Chatham's Word War I Memorial

Memorial Day Commemoration

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country.

The Town of Chatham Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2022 outdoors at the Community Center and will begin at 10 A.M.

Dedication of the American Revolutionary War Memorial is scheduled for Memorial Day at 11A.M. in Chase Park, below the Godfrey Windmill. As a part of the Memorial service at the Community Center at 10AM, Colonel Benjamin Godfrey will tell the assembled crowds about the dedication. He will in turn, lead those interested in attending through Town to Chase Park. After the dedication the Windmill will be open for the public.

Please join us this Memorial Day as we pause to honor those who died in service to our Nation.

The Mainsheet

The name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community.
In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
