Fools Rush In at Hardings BeachThe April Fools of the Chatham Fire Department are taking the plunge tomorrow, Saturday, April 1st at 11:30 a.m. at Hardings Beach rain or shine! Our Firefighters have rallied support for amazing community members over the years and the 2023 beneficiaries are no exception. This year the event is held in support of one of their own, Firefighter Vance Bates. Vance has been a Firefighter/Paramedic with the CFD since 2005. This past year he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and began treatment in December 2022. His treatments have taken a toll physically, requiring him to miss time from work. During his treatment Vance's wife Adrian suffered a hemorrhagic stroke on December 22, 2022. While she is making great strides in her recovery, Adrian is now also unable to work. Vance has taken care of his community with pride and professionalism and now it is time for us to take care of him. We hope this is the biggest and best attended swim yet! Donations of all amounts are graciously accepted. Any remaining T-shirts will be sold at the swim for $25. A post-swim BBQ will be held at the Chatham VFW immediately following. If you would like to donate but are not able to attend, please donate online via the “Support for Vance and Adrian Bates” GoFundMe page, or cash and checks may be sent to: April Fools, Chatham Fire Department,135 Depot Rd., Chatham, MA 02633.

Tax Bills Issued The second installment Real Estate and Personal Property Tax bills for Fiscal Year 2023 were mailed out on Friday, March 24th. Please note that the bill print vendor inadvertently included a return envelope in with the tax bills even though the Town of Chatham does not include return envelopes with billings. The envelope is not the proper envelope for mailing your remittance and tax payment(s). The remittance does not fit the envelope correctly. To ensure your payment(s) arrives at our office and is not returned to you, please do not use the envelope provided. As a reminder, you can also pay your bill on-line, in person or via the drop box outside the entrance of the Town Hall. The tax bills also contained a notice that 2023 Beach and Transfer Station stickers were available for purchase online. The 2023 stickers will be available April 1st.

Community Housing Survey ResultsPresentation Scheduled on April 11thThe results of the Community Housing Survey and a review of findings and feedback from the February 15th Community Housing Engagement Forum will be presented at the April 11th meeting of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund Board of Trustees. Consultants from Barrett Planning Group and Dodson & Flinker Landscape Architects will also provide information regarding project feasibility and financing for various development scenarios for Town-owned properties at Main Street, West Chatham and Meetinghouse Road, South Chatham. The online Community Housing Survey, which closed on March 12, received an impressive 878 responses. This survey allowed residents and others with a connection to Chatham to provide comments and feedback on the development design concepts for the Main Street and Meetinghouse Road properties that were presented at the February forum, as well as a series of images of various housing types and densities of development. The February forum PowerPoint presentation is available on the Town’s Housing webpage and the forum itself can be viewed on through the Channel 18 archive. The Affordable Housing Board of Trustees will have the opportunity to provide comments and feedback to the consultants regarding preferred development parameters, including density, housing type, site layout, for each site, taking into consideration feedback from the community engagement forums, the results of the community housing survey, and information provided by the consultants regarding project feasibility. There will be an opportunity for public comment. This feedback will inform landscape architects Dodson & Flinker, who will then draw up the preferred design concept plans, in keeping with a grounded, feasible community vision for each site. These updated and refined plans will be shared with the community during the third and final community meeting of this engagement process in May, date to be announced. The meeting of the Affordable Housing Board of Trustees will follow the Select Board meeting on April 11th and will be held in the large meeting room at the Town Office Annex, 261 George Ryder Road. Remote participation will be available through the link in the posted agenda. The meeting will be broadcast live on Channel 18.

2024 Regional Transportation PlanOnline Survey Now OpenThe Cape Cod Commission is seeking comments and input from the public to support development of the 2024 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). An online survey is now open. The RTP sets the long-range vision for the transportation system on Cape Cod in 2050. It is the primary means for the allocation of federal and state funds for the Cape's transportation needs. The Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), a collaboration of local, regional, state, and federal transportation officials, is charged with updating the RTP this spring. The Cape Cod Commission wants to hear from you. What is your vision for the future of transportation on Cape Cod? More sidewalks and bike paths? Increased bus service? Commuter rail? Improved pavement conditions? Replacement of the existing Canal bridges? Safer roadways? Increased access to electric vehicle charging stations? To learn more about the Plan, see a calendar of upcoming meetings, and participate in the online survey, please visit the Commission’s webpage. Groups interested in sharing their unique perspective on their future transportation needs are encouraged to contact the Cape Cod Commission staff to schedule a brief meeting to further discuss their vision. The MainsheetThe name of our e-newsletter was selected from submissions by our community. In nautical terms a mainsheet is the line connected to the boom which allows a sailor to control the speed of a boat. We think that is fitting for an e-newsletter that can be used to quickly send out important information to our community or at a more leisurely rate for less pressing matters. It reflects Chatham’s maritime history, is reminiscent of the front page of a newspaper, and it is a fun play on Main Street, where you go to be part of all that is happening in Town!
