- Bark - comes in different colors and textures
- Pine Needles - keeps ground moist
- Low growing plants - those in the evergreen family will give a green look year-round.
Some plant choices for ground cover are:
- Yarrow - can withstand foot traffic, grows in poor, dry soil, and needs little care once established.
- Wooly Yarrow - has attractive small silvery plumes and a soothing scent.
- Alyssum - grow 6 inches, once established reseeds itself, tolerant to dry soil and attractive when in bloom.
- Thyme - low growing, spreads quickly, colorful - light yellow to deep gray-green. Requires dry, poor soil.
- Corsican Mint - too tender to walk on, but it does make a very tight mat, about 1 inch high.
- Silver Mound Wormwood - forms a dense, silvery mount. It can withstand light foot traffic and takes drought well.
- Sweet Woodruff - a shade loving ground cover with a sweet fragrance, a rapid grower with tiny white flowers.
- Wood Strawberry - extremely fast growing and develops small fruit. One plant may put out up to 40 runners a year.
- Speedwell - fond of dry, infertile soils. A good lawn substitute, but does not like traffic.
- Ivy - year-round coverage.
- Periwinkle - low growing vine
